#FitnessFriday – Push Ups

Push ups are an effective compound exercise involving the use of more than one muscle group and joint that all need to activate to complete the movement.  See how our physiotherapist, Tara Clark, correctly performs this exercise:
– Start in a plank position supporting your body weight on your hands and feet.
– Make sure your shoulder blades are set down away from the ears.
– Engage your core, and start to descend your body towards the ground by bending your elbows and squeezing your shoulder blades together.
– Keeping your core engaged and your body in a straight line from your head to your heels push through the heel of your hands to straighten your elbows and come back to the start position.

#FitnessFriday – Sumo Squat

The sumo squat is an effective lower body strength exercise to target the glutes. The wide stance emphasizes the muscles of the inner thigh and can be performed as a traditional squat or with a weight at chest height to challenge the core.

  • Start with feet wider than hip width apart and feet slightly turned out on a 45 degree angle.
  • Engage the core and hinge the hips backwards before bending the knees and descending into the squat.
  • Keeping the chest up tall, engage the glutes to stand back up.
