Flat feet can be caused for a variety of reasons. Genetics, disease, obesity and poor foot mechanics for example. Improper foot function can lead to a range of problems from foot and ankle pain, plantar faciitis, overuse injuries, muscle strains and sprains, sports injuries, knee and hip problems and lower back pain. Abnormal mechanics and poor joint function can also lead to long term osteoarthritis. Our feet basically perform two functions, shock absorbing and propulsion. When the feet are flat neither of these functions are performed efficiently. Custom casted orthotics are prescribed to control abnormal alignments and establish proper biomechanical function allowing for greater efficiency of muscle and joint function.
