Claw and hammer toes are a progressive deformity often associated with bunions. The toes begin to curl over and with time begin to lose flexibility and become fixed and rigid. They are often caused by footwear and poor foot mechanics. As the toes become more curled, they can rub on the shoe causing painful callus and corns, bursitis, infections. Treatment often takes the form of more appropriate shoes, custom orthotics, padding and protection and in worse cases surgical straightening.
