Nail fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the nail.
Fungi thrive in a warm, dark, moist environment which we provide in socks and shoes. Without treatment the chances of it resolving on its own are very low. Nail fungus is often associated with fungal infections of the skin or Athletes foot. Treatment can be in the form of topical medication, oral medication prescribed by your family physician, lasers or Photodynamic Therapy. Photodynamic Therapy was first developed for cancer treatment. It involves removing the bulk of infected nail, application of a photosensitizing compound and applying a specific wavelength of light to the area. The light causes the photosensitizer to react with the exposed tissue, killing the fungus. PDT can also be used for treatment of warts.
