Ingrown nails occur when the edge of the nail digs or cuts into the skin causing swelling, pain and infection. In most cases the offending spike of nail can be removed conservatively. However, when the area is very swollen and infected the only solution is surgery. Nail surgery is an in office procedure performed under local anaesthesia. In most cases a portion or all of the nail is removed to resolve the problem.  Ingrown nails do not usually get better on their own and only get worse if not attended to properly.
